Son of ex-Aspen mayor accused of assaulting woman
DENVER – The son of a former mayor of Aspen is accused of beating his pregnant girlfriend and forcing her to drink vodka.
Forty-one-year-old Soren Klanderud of Basalt has been charged with two misdemeanors the case – third-degree assault and false imprisonment. He was arrested May 28, soon after his girlfriend called 911.
The woman, who has not been identified, said her fetus died after the alleged assault. She said Klanderud beat her, tried to suffocate her with a pillow and poured vodka down her throat while holding her nose closed.
Klanderud is the son of former Aspen mayor Helen Klanderud, who left office in May 2007 because of term limits.
Police say Klanderud was drunk when he was arrested and he has entered an alcohol rehabilitation program.
