Southern fried comedy at Eagle’s Back Bowl
EAGLE – To chart the journey that brings Steve ‘Mudflap’ McGrew to the stage of the Back Bowl in Eagle tonight for Comedy Night at the Bowlmor, one needs to start in the newsroom of the Houston Chronicle. It was there in the mid ’70s that McGrew channeled his quirky views of the world as a cartoonist for the newspaper.
While still in Houston he first ventured onto the stage of a local comedy club for an amateur night. His exuberant personality and keenly humorous observations had found an outlet that drawing cartoons couldn’t provide. His uncanny ability to connect with his audience didn’t go unnoticed and soon he became a regular at Houston’s popular Comedy Workshop, which was a hotbed for up and coming “southern fried” comics.
Thirty years along an arc of hard work, McGrew has worked in clubs throughout the country, large and small, in backwaters and major cities. A big break came following his showing as a Star Search semi-finalist, earning him a spot on Showtime’s iconic comedy showcase, “Full Frontal Comedy.”
When not working clubs and TV, he has opened for many of the top comedy musical acts of the day, working with entertainers as diverse as Billy Crystal and Dolly Parton, B.B. King and Billy Ocean and many more.
McGrew’s fast-paced, unconventional style and energetic delivery have led to him being described as a “Redneck on acid.” This reputation, along with the surging popularity of blue-collar comedy in the U.S., drew interest and a string of invitations to appear in Great Brittain and Canada as a headliner both on stage and TV.
Lucky for us in Colorado, he spends most of his non-stage time as a morning radio host on Denver’s 92.5 the WOLF. Even luckier, he’ll be plying his ever-so-indiscrete talents in Eagle. The show, part of the Back Bowl’s popular Comedy Night at the Bowlmor series, is tonight at the Back Bowl at 8 p.m. and features opener Jordan Doll.
Tickets are $15 on the day of the show. Holiday groups can take advantage of special pricing for groups of 8 or more. Tickets can be purchased in person at The Back Bowl, or by phone with a credit card.
