EAGLE COUNTY A group of Eagle County Charter School seventh graders didnt have much time to miss their new friends from Austria. The group traveled to Lech Beaver Creeks sister resort on July 14. The Austrian students with whom they stayed, hiked, rafter and had other adventures are visiting the valley until Sunday. During their stay, the Austrian students plan to accompany the local kids to a Colorado Rockies game and Elitch Gardens amusement park. The kids will also go water skiing and camping, and see a rodeo. While in Austria, the group, chaperoned by charter school principal Jay Cerny, hiked in the Alps, toured bread and cheese factories and went bungy jumping. They also spent then night in a hut that dates to the origins of Alpine skiing. Longtime Vail resident Johannes Faessler plans to give the Austrian students a tour of the Sonnenalp Hotel because may of their families own hotels. The students also planned to have lunch at Pepi’s, where Sheika and Pepi will give the children a warm Austrian welcome to Vail. The students werent total strangers before the trip to Austria. They had been e-mailing each since February.
