Annual Coal Bucket Classic golf event set for Wednesday in Vail
November 13, 2017
With forecasts predicting snow on Thursday, Nov. 16, or Friday, Nov. 17, the Vail Recreation District has decided to host this year's Coal Bucket Classic on Wednesday, Nov. 15. A Vail tradition, the Coal Bucket Classic is held after the golf course has officially closed, but before the first big snow of the season.
Previous winners typically determine the format and rules of play. Kristin Olson (winner of the 2016 Classic) is this year's rule maker, and is considering a four-club format. The Coal Bucket Classic is usually a nine-hole event, but may be modified depending on conditions. The rec district has tentatively decided that regular holes 1, 9-12 and 16-18 will be in play. There will be a small number of carts available to players with mobility needs only, please notify the recreation district in advance so accommodations can be made.
Limited Snacks Available
Golfers are asked to sign in at the Vail Golf Club and be ready to play by 11 a.m. Sign in will occur at the Grill on the Gore restaurant in the clubhouse above the pro shop. Limited drinks and snacks will also be available for purchase before the round. The event will have a shotgun start, and the recreation district will begin sending groups out to holes at 11 a.m. Be aware that the greens have been sprayed for the winter with a pigment that may stain shoes and clothing, so this is the one time you can get away with wearing jeans to play. Greens have also been roped off, so be prepared to duck ropes without getting in trouble for this special occasion.
The coveted prize of the Coal Bucket Classic is, of course, a coal bucket. The antique bucket, originally owned by the mother of local Rod Slifer, has every winner's name and year of victory written on it, going all the way back to 1968. Winners typically get to keep the bucket until the spring.
After the round, join the recreation district in the Grill on the Gore restaurant for an after-party with beers and brats available for purchase.
