Devils drop Homecoming game to Grizzlies

GYPSUM — Eagle Valley wrapped up nonconference play with yet another competitive game, but fell to Northridge, 31-23, Friday night.

It was Homecoming and the Devils faithful were out in full force, but turnovers proved to be the difference against the Grizzlies.

Corben Funk intercepted the Grizzlies quarterback in the end zone in the fourth quarter with the Devils trailing, 21-10. On the very next play, quarterback Garrett Martin connected on a short slant with Matthew Sanchez, who took it 80 yards to the house and pulling the Devils within one score, 21-17.

On the ensuing Northridge drive, the Devils forced a three-and-out, but Funk fumbled the punt, setting up the Grizzlies (3-2) for a 33-yard touchdown pass to pad the lead with nine minutes left, 28-17.

The Devils put together a drive later in the fourth quarter with connections from Martin to Sanchez and Tiegan Torbett, ending with a 1-yard touchdown by Martin, making it 28-23. But the Grizzlies marched down the field and added a field goal with a minute left for the final score, 31-23.

The Devils ended 1-4 in non-conference play, with close games against tough competition, including a loss at Kent Denver in the final minute. Time will tell if the tough non-conference will pay off in league play.

Eagle Valley (1-4) now moves to conference play on the road against Summit County on Friday.

The Devils defense played stout, with Torbett and Sanchez making tackles all over the field. Gabriel Baldwin and Zach Carvill also made tackles at the line of scrimmage for Eagle Valley.

However, Devils turnovers, six in all, helped set up the Grizzlies offense in decent field position throughout the game.

Torbett took a hard hit on the Devils final drive, fumbling the ball, but he later walked off with the help of medical staff.

On a side note, the Devils kicking game is showing signs of life. Both extra points were converted, and Alex Torres, a soccer player, drilled a 35-yarder at the end of the first half. Torres also had a beautiful squib kick late in the fourth quarter, but the Devils couldn't recover.
