Eagle Valley Devils and Battle MountainHuskies spikers bow out at regionals

There were no happy endings for the Eagle County's 4A volleyball teams.

No. 21 Eagle Valley and No. 36 Battle Mountain were both bounced from regional play this weekend.

The Devils went 1-1 at Region 4 in Niwot on Friday, Nov. 3, beating Canon City, 25-17, 25-15, 25-17, before falling to the host, 25-16, 25-13, 25-22.

"Canon City, we did really well against them. That was one of our best matches of the season," Devils coach Jackie Rindy said. "Niwot was big, but we played well against them. We did nothing fundamentally wrong. We played good volleyball."

Eagle Valley finished the year 16-8 and bids farewell to a tremendous senior class that led the Devils to two consecutive 4A Slope titles and state appearance in 2016.

"They have left the program in better shape than they found it," Rindy said. "They a tremendous group and they're not done. They have a lot of volleyball in their future."

Meanwhile, Battle Mountain fell in straight sets at Region 1 to Berthoud and Lewis-Palmer, the latter being the No. 1 team in the state.

"We limited our unforced errors and brought the best game we can," Huskies coach Jason Fitzgerald said. "They're No. 1 for a reason. We walked out of there knowing that if we want to be at that level, that's the measuring stick."

The first weekend in November is often when state dreams meet with cold reality. The top six seeds, Lewis Palmer, Valor Christian, Holy Family, Niwot, Palmer Ridge, D'Evelyn, all advanced to the Denver Coliseum.

No. 18 Discovery Canyon, No. 17 Roosevelt, No. 28 Mullen, No. 10 Pueblo West. No. 26 Cheyenne Mountain and No. 25. Ponderosa round out the state field in Denver.

All four Western Slope teams, the Devils, the Huskies, Palisade and Glenwood Springs, were eliminated.
