Glenwood Springs too much for Battle Mountain

EDWARDS — It tough sledding right now for Battle Mountain football these days.

It's not a lack of effort or heart. It's sheer numbers.

It's apparent simply looking the sidelines — Glenwood Springs brought a full-sized squad to Edwards on Friday night, and Battle Mountain was struggling to suit up 30 players with injuries, and the Demons came away with a 38-20 win.

The Demons (3-4 overall and 1-1 in the 3A Slope) raced out to a 17-0 lead. Luke Gair scored on a 2-yard run as part of a big night. Glenwood quarterback Jake Townsley, who used his mobility well against the Huskies, hit Stephen Romero for a 10-yard scoring strike. Tyler Dietrich added a 26-yard field goal.

Building momentum

Battle Mountain (3-4, 0-2) looked like it was building some momentum with a drive capped by a 32-yard field goal from Nelson Ledezma with 1:02 left in the half. With the Huskies getting the ball to start the second half, it might have been the start of a rally. But Townsley found receiver Luke Patch for a 69-yard pass. That set up Townsley to call his own number for a 24-3 halftime lead.

The Huskies are limited on offense by injury, but that didn't stop Battle Mountain from throwing the kitchen sink at the Demons. Battle Mountain showed wildcats sets, and even lined up quarterback Robert Redinger at tight end on one formation. Redinger, back in his more conventional quarterback spot, converted a 4-and-10 with a beautiful 19-yard screen pass to Cal Masler in the third quarter to get the Huskies going.

Redinger later scored on a 1-yard sneak. Redinger also accounted a 41-yard scoring pass during the fourth quarter.

The road does not get any easier for the Huskies next week as they head to Palisade.
