Gore Rangers soccer sets up a showdown with CA

Vail Mountain School's Tess Johnson shoots and scores on Friday against Florence in Lakewood during the 3A state playoffs. VMS faces Colorado Academy today.

LAKEWOOD — Vail Mountain School soccer took care of the preliminaries in the first round of the 3A state playoffs, dusting Florence, 7-0, in Lakewood.

Today is the big one as the No. 15-ranked Gore Rangers take on No. 2 Colorado Academy at 11 a.m.

A bit of rest after an arduous final stretch of four games in six days was just what the doctor ordered. VMS had a little more spring in its step against Florence.

Maddy Cooper and Tess Johnson both scored twice. Anwyn Urquhart, Lindsey Peterson and Emma Hall all scored.

"We're enthusiastic," VMS coach Bob Bandoni said. "Everyone was inspired and ready to play the game. The group is so much more energetic. We felt as though the last two weeks, we've been starting in the 15th round. You can only be Rocky Balboa so many times."

And, yes, that was a cliche by the coach. The Bandoni, in all his professorial wisdom, had locked himself out of his hotel room on Friday night.

Host Colorado Academy had a bye and the day off. On the other hand, due to the kinks of the rating-percentage index, this is probably not going to be an average 15-2 matchup.
