DENVER — Welcome back, Naomi Harding.

Madame Harding was all set for a big season for Battle Mountain cross-country when she had a bike accident that some in Huskies camp thought might cause her to miss the season.

Not so.

She came back at Saturday’s Roadrunner Invitational at Metropolitan State University in Denver and was the team’s fifth scorer.

“It was such a bonus for her and the entire team,” Huskies coach Rob Parish said. “In the summer she was probably one of our strongest runners. This group had so much momentum and was so excited. It was a blow for her to go down. To their credit, girls such as Bella Rubis, Megan Bamford and Grace Johnson have done a great job holing down the fort.”

Harding did what she could to stay in shape, while she was out. But, of course, nothing matches running shape, and so it will take her a little bit to get there. Parish has said he will make the adjustments in a training plan for her with regionals on Oct. 20 and state later in the month.

The Huskies ladies took third in this small meet behind only 5A powers Broomfield and Mountain Vista, a very good showing.

Of note was that both Liz Constien (fourth) and Lizzie Harding (seventh) both cracked the top 10 in this tough field.

The guys finished eighth and were the No. 2 4A school in the race. They were racing without Nate Badger and James Moran (standardized testing), but the gents showed their depth with Nick Williams popping in on the team’s fourth spot and Max Grimaldi having a great day.

Battle Mountain is at Northglenn on Friday.
