Here comes the second round of the postseason
February 24, 2016
Happy postseason, part II.
We had wrestling and 4A basketball last week. On tap is state skiing and 2A basketball. Here's the rundown:
OK, the buses left last week. Is everyone enjoying the Canyon Chaos? It was funny how chsaa.org ran a story last week about the trials and travails of Grand Junction wrestlers who had a tough time getting to the Pepsi Center last week for the state tournament because of the Glenwood Canyon closure.
Heaven forfend anybody in Denver have a clue about Western Slope teams go through in a season. Evergreen soccer got stuck in traffic while coming up to Edwards last fall. Oh, the humanity. I hope its ski team enjoys this jaunt to Aspen.
Presumably, everyone's arrived. Now for the skiing.

The first rule of state skiing is that anything can and will happen. Mortal locks on the hill will pop a ski, straddle a gate and/or fall down for no particular reason.
A Nordic skier will get lost. You think I'm joking, but I've covered kids whose goggles fogged up or iced up, and they did a whole lot more than a 5K.
One way to avoid this is trust, and I'm talking to you, Battle Mountain.
This is not, say, 5-10 years ago, when Huskies alpine had to rack up the maximum 177 points in a giant slalom or slalom and pray that Nordic shows a pulse.
Battle Mountain's Nordic team has a lot more than a pulse. It's a vibrant program, which is why we can talk state title.
The second rule of state skiing is that titles are won in Nordic. The Vail Mountain School, as usual, is on its own planet when it comes to the tiny skis. As always, we root for everyone, but, with regard to a state title, the Huskies just need to keep up with Aspen, Steamboat and Summit County.
Don't go out to try to be a hero. That's when things go wrong, particularly on the alpine side. Take your two runs, score points and let Nordic bring it home.

Vail Christian boys vs. Cedaredge
Every indication is that this should be a close game. And that brings us to the topic of fouls. You had far too many of them on Tuesday night against Rangely. Stop fouling and play defense.
Historically, this is one of the more fascinating things about this team — besides, of course, it's not being young, no, sir. You actually know how to play defense, so please do so. I'm looking at the bigs — David Caballero, Alex Davis and Ethan Kuhns.
Also regarding fouls, when they send you to the line, it's time to make those shots. Knock 'em down, boys. That's how you win close playoff games.
Vail Christian girls vs. Paonia
No one thinks you've got a shot. They're big bad Paonia. You probably shouldn't even drive to DeBeque on Friday. Just show up on Saturday for the third-place game.
This is the best Vail Christian girls basketball team I've seen. Just ask assistant coach Patrick Beaudine — he's seen most of the history — you're head and shoulders above the rest.
You can play defense, you can rebound and you have multiple scoring options. Let's see how you measure up. You beat Soroco in Soroco. You are a good team. Let it fly, ladies.
