‘Merry New Year’ — how we cover prep sports
August 7, 2015
As Eddie Murphy would say, "Merry New Year."
Here's your scary thought with regard to the upcoming school year — every kid I'll be covering was born after I started working here on Sept. 4, 1997, so the youngsters probably don't get, "Merry New Year."
It was a time before cell phones, when coaches actually had to use things called payphones and/or landlines to report results from the road.
This is our annual briefing on how the Vail Daily will be covering all things Battle Mountain, Eagle Valley, Vail Christian and Vail Mountain School.
Use those new-fangled cell phones
I've just typed out the master schedule — all four schools' schedules in every sport — starting with golf in Cedaredge on Thursday. I will do my best to go to games of every school in every sport, but there will inevitably be conflicts as we have 18 varsity teams playing this season.

If your team is on the road or I'm not able to make a home game/meet because of this hectic schedule, then call me. Every varsity coach has my cell phone number. I generally start my day by calling all the coaches who are at games that I will not be able to make with a reminder to call in results. (What did we do before cell phones?)
Most often, when a reader calls to complain about lack of coverage it's because I haven't heard from the coach. Coaches, please, please, please call.
And please don't wait until your road game is done and then drive back home to call. The earlier a coach calls, the better chance it's going to be in the paper the next day.
Thanks, Al Gore
When I started here, the Vail Daily had one computer with access to the Internet. (True story. This is not a joke.) Our deadline is 9:30 p.m., which inevitably means that some teams will not make the paper edition of the Vail Daily for the next day.
But thanks to Al Gore, another joke that our student-athletes won't get, we've got a website, http://www.vaildaily.com.
If I hear from coaches, I continue writing past our print deadline and post articles on the Internet. With whatever makes the paper, I generally run a refer, or a box, that says, "For more on today's preps action, go to http://www.vaildaily.com." But when in doubt, go to everyone's favorite website, http://www.vaildaily.com.
And yes, I will do my best to get as many articles on our website into print, as I know our readers like their scrapbooks.
When I got here in 1997, we actually had three people in sports, so I covered Battle Mountain exclusively. Ergo, I've been thought of in the past as the Great Satan in Gypsum. We're making progress, though. Last fall, a Battle Mountain volleyball parent thought I attended Eagle Valley when I was in high school.
If it isn't painfully obvious, I went to school in San Francisco. My favorite team is the San Francisco Giants, people. (By the way, I think we've won the Series in 2010, 2012 and 2014.) I do not have a favorite school among our four here.
I like all four schools for different reasons. Battle Mountain has its own funky culture and history with its great soccer and running teams and yes, its football team. I love Eagle Valley with its downvalley feel. From a parochial school, Vail Christian teams have the best sense of humor and VMS, well, its soccer teams wear orange, so that's good.
I want all our teams to win because I'm such a better writer when they do. When we get two schools playing each other, I hope for a close game. It's as simple as that.
How you can help
First and foremost, encourage your coaches to call in results. Again, I do not have telepathic powers to divine results.
And, yes, please send us your pictures. Action shots from the road are always great, particularly teams like golf and cross country, which don't have many home meets. Even if I can't use them immediately, I keep a file for future stories. My email is firstname.lastname@example.org.
And please use the above address if you have any story ideas or concerns. I'm always open to hearing from you.
Good luck to everybody, and see you at the games.
