No. 3 Platte Canyon runs past Vail Christian Friday

Vail Christian's Joseph Emmer tries to break a tackle against Platte Canyon on Friday in Edwards. Vail Christian fell, 55-8, and heads to Bennett next week.

EDWARDS — Truth be told, Vail Christian football was up against it as No. 3-ranked Platte Canyon came to town.

There was no fairy-tale upset as the visiting Huskies — sounds weird — rolled to a 55-8 win, as expected, at Battle Mountain on Friday night.

Already adjusting to the move from 8-man to 11-man football, the Saints were without their starting quarterback, running back and center, among other injuries.

But the youngsters in Vail Christian blue and white had their moments. Joey Beveridge, at times, looked very much like, well, a freshman quarterback, which he just happens to be.

He also led the Saints on a terrific drive midway through the first half. — 16 plays and 67 yards. Sophomore Alex Hilty powered through a few holes well-made by the Saints offensive line. Beveridge completed a 20-yard pass to Jack Powers on a third-and-9. On a fourth-and-3, he hooked up with Joseph Emmer for eight.

And on fourth-and-goal from the 1, Beveridge did former head of school Jeremy Lowe proud, because, of course, no one can stop the bootleg. The freshman quarterback rolled left and found the end zone. Beveridge to Sal Gonzalez was good for the 2-point conversion.

"I'm proud of that," Saints coach Tim Pierson said. "We had a freshman quarterback in there that was very composed. I thought Joey Beveridge did a great job leading the troops. The O-line did what we asked them to do early. There's some growing pains. That's a great team."

Platte Canyon was up, 16-8, at that point and scored on its first seven possessions and took a knee on their eighth as the clock expired. The Huskies (5-0) were not subtle in the slightest with their offense. They ran at will most effectively.

The Saints (1-4) are at Bennett next week.
