Saturday’s preps wrap: Huskies volleyball beats Elizabeth; Battle Mountain soccer falls in OT
August 25, 2018
EDWARDS — This is the point of having three big boppers on the attack.
One can have a night off and you still have two options.
After a rough game against Vail Christian in the season opener, Battle Mountain volleyball's Tatum Huffman came back with a vengeance on Saturday, Aug. 25, during a 25-16, 25-11, 25-21 victory over Elizabeth.
"We definitely showed up a little more prepared mentally to play," Huskies coach Jason Fitzgerald said. "It being our home opener, we did a good job of containing our nerves. We recognized we had an audience."
Let the shadowboxing begin. That audience included Eagle Valley's varsity squad. Perhaps, the Devils were thinking about Sept. 20, and the first of two meetings between the two rivals.
Along with Huffman, Eleanor Sheahan was a big factor on offense with setter Ava Spangler doing a nice job setting. Mason Lyon also contributed with aggressive serving.

Huskies soccer falls in OT
Going into a season opening road trip of Montrose and Durango on back-to-back days, a realistic goal for Battle Mountain soccer was getting three points out of the trip.
The so-called problem is when the Huskies won the opener 4-1 at Montrose on Friday, Aug, 24, a team tends to get greedy, a good thing.
That made Saturday, Aug. 25's 3-2 overtime loss at Durango a heartbreaker. The bottom line is that Battle Mountain (1-1), which is hoping to rebuild on the fly, knows it can play with some of the better teams in the state after this weekend.
Daniel Barajas and Jose Soto staked the Huskies to a 2-1 lead over the Demons, but the Huskies couldn't hang on as the hosts got the equalizer and then the game-winner during the final minute of extra time.
Battle Mountain opens the defense of its 4A Slope title on Tuesday, Aug. 28, at Eagle Valley.
