Ski & Snowboard Club Vail hosts freestyle comp

Some of Ski & Snowboard Club Vail's youngest freestyle athletes gather behind the Clubhouse in celebration of their participation in this past weekend's Rocky Mountain Freestyle series events on Cookshack, the last home freestyle competition of the season.

VAIL — Ski & Snowboard Club Vail hosted a Rocky Mountain freestyle mogul event on Cookshack on Saturday and Sunday. After a week of consistent, heavy snowfall, freestyle athletes took advantage of the blue skies and warmer weather to compete against one another on sun-softened bumps.

More than fifty competitors participated in Saturday's event, and more than forty-five athletes competed on Sunday. Despite sharing Cookshack's venue, Saturday's and Sunday's events differed in format and the ages of its participants. On Saturday, freestyle skiers ages 10 and older taking part in the Rocky Qualifier Series competed against one another hoping for a podium finish. The Rocky Qualifier Series, a two-jump timed competition, serves as a stepping-stone for mogul skiers to better prepare themselves for the upper level Rocky Competitive Series.

On Sunday, Cookshack hosted a Rocky Development Series event — a freestyle series for athletes ages 12 and younger featuring a one jump competition that was not timed.

"On Saturday, a number of our freestyle athletes moved up from the Devo to the (Rocky Qualifier Series) level competition to compete in a two jump course on Cookshack, taking advantage of their one time free move up opportunity for the season. Several top ten finishes were posted among this move-up group. A number of these move-up athletes competed again on Sunday in the Devo competition, capturing some top-five podiums," said John Grigsby, who heads up the Ski & Snowboard Club Vail freestyle development program.

"It was great to see a number of top five finishes by our athletes on both days. This weekend's events show great promise for the future of Ski & Snowboard Club Vail's moguls athletes," he added.

The next Rocky Mountain qualifier and development freestyle events will take place in mid-February in Steamboat Springs.
