Vail Christian topples R.M. Lutheran, 42-16

Vail Christian quarterback Mike Lange drops back to pass during the Saints' 42-16 win at Rocky Mountain Lutheran on Saturday. Lange scored two touchdowns including an interception return on defense.

LONGMONT — Welcome home, Vail Christian football.

In a novel concept, the Saints actually have two homes game in a row — a veritable bounty — after starting the season with three road games in four weeks.

Vail Christian is returning to Eagle County fresh off a 42-16 win over Rocky Mountain Lutheran on Saturday in clash of two undefeated teams in the Central League.

Max Schramm broke the seal on the game with a 3-yard scoring run. The second quarter was all about Mike Lange. The senior had a pick-six for 48 yards. This is part of a nice trend for the Saints this season of ball-hawking, be it interceptions, strips on returns or breaking up punts.

Lange got his second score of the day on a 25-yard counter. With the conversion by Sug Ellsworth, the Saints went into the locker room with a 20-0 lead.

Ellsworth did the damage in the third quarter. He had two rushing touchdowns as a part a 141-yard day on the ground. Ellsworth also had 15 tackles and two sacks on defense, so he's probably going to get another start again when the Saints are home.

Up 34-16, Vail Christian's Schramm finished things up with a trip to the house.

"We came down and ran the ball well," Saints coach Tim Pierson said. "Our line was solid up front. We made some mental mistakes with turnovers and penalties and backed ourselves into some holes. But we rallied together, and that's football."

Home Sweet Home

It's also pretty tough spending a lot of a time on the road, so the Saints, 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Central, will be darned happy to play a home game on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Elbert at Battle Mountain High School. (Hopefully, the team will remember where it put its blue uniforms.)

And Saturday's game is looking like another league showdown. The visiting Bulldogs are 3-0 in the Central and its only loss in nonconference play was a 24-22 decision to Kiowa in Week 2. The Bulldogs beat West Grand, 44-6, on Friday night.
