VAIL — The Vail Mountaineers, the local youth hockey club, are gearing up to host the 38th annual Vail Mountaineer Sportsmanship Tournament.

Starting this weekend with the Bantam and Midget divisions, the tournament spans the next three weekends through Sunday, Nov. 19.

Held between Dobson Ice Arena in Vail and the Eagle Ice Rink, the Sportsmanship Tournament hosts Squirt, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget talent in the Rockies and nonstop games. The Mountaineer program uses the Sportsmanship Tournament as its single largest fundraiser to offset program costs for more than 170 local families. The Vail Mountaineer Hockey Club provides youth hockey opportunities for all ability levels in the Eagle County area for both boys and girls. Teams include both competitive travel teams and recreational in-house programs for youth ages 8 to 17.

'Based on sportsmanship'

Medical care will be provided throughout the tournament by Vail Summit Orthopedics and a complimentary hospitality room will be available to tournament participants and their families on the three consecutive Saturdays of the tournament. Avon Bakery & Deli, Blue Moose Pizza, Garfinkel's and La Cantina are sponsoring the hospitality rooms this year.

"A tournament of this size takes lots of work from our local club and families," tournament director Amy Parliament said. "But the nature of this tournament based on sportsmanship and seeing the game beyond just the final score, creates a very positive experience for all teams involved."
