Yes, it’s Eagle Valley Homecoming, honest

Daily Staff Report

No one can ever accuse the Vail Daily of not being overly diligent. Two weeks ago, we committed what we call in the journalism industry a brain cramp. That’s a technical insider’s term. The rest of the world would call it a screw up.We thought that Eagle Valley’s Homecoming was the week of Sept. 12-17, and accordingly, brought out all the bells and whistles which traditionally accompany coverage of such an event. That was nice, except for the fact this is actually Homecoming week for the Devils.Whoops.So with apologies to Battle Mountain, Vail Christian and Vail Mountain, we give you, “Eagle Valley Homecoming, The Sequel,” this week. Starting Thursday, we’ll be spotlighting Devils athletes through Sunday’s edition. We will also have our traditional Friday Homecoming page for Eagle Valley. And, it should be quite a week.– Thursday, Devils soccer hosts Battle Mountain at 6 p.m. under the lights at Hot Stuff Stadium. Yes, what the world calls football is coming to Hot Stuff. The Huskies won the first meeting of the season between these two teams, 4-0, in Eagle-Vail. This could be a different story. The Devils will be amped up for their first night home game. The field could also be a factor. Hot Stuff’s pitch is smaller than a regulation soccer field, which will limit Battle Mountain’s athleticism and ability to play out wide. Advantage Devils.– Friday, it’s football American-style as the Devils host the Huskies at 7 p.m. No pep talks will be needed. Both teams have articles about the other hanging in their respective locker rooms. Eagle Valley (3-1) is the favorite over Battle Mountain (1-3) and has had its way in this rivalry since 1997. But last year’s game was tighter than expected. Eagle Valley led just 21-17 before mounting a 19-play, 80-yard drive that ate 11:30 off the clock for a 28-17 win. Get to Hot Stuff early. The place will be packed. Also, bring your radio. The game’s on KZYR, The Zephyr.– Saturday, Eagle Valley softball has Palisade for a pair at 11 a.m. If you haven’t seen these ladies so far this year, you’ve been missing something special. With apologies to Tom Hanks, these girls are in a league of their own. At 1 p.m., the spikers take on Steamboat in Gypsum. The Devils have had a bit of a rocky start, but have started to turn the corner. There would be no better way to celebrate Homecoming than with a Devils’ win over the Sailors.– Happy Homecoming, Eagle Valley. We really mean it this time.Sports editor Chris Freud can be reached at 949-0555 or via cfreud@vaildaily.com.Vail, Colorado
