A pair of Ski and Snowboard Club Vail Alpine skiers posted top-10 finishes for the U.S. at the Youth Olympic Games this week in Gangwon Province, South Korea.
Going up against the world’s best 15-18-year-olds, Nicole Begue placed sixth in the women’s super-G on Sunday and 12th in the Alpine Combined on Tuesday. Stewie Bruce was 10th in the men’s super-G, Wednesday’s giant slalom and Thursday’s slalom. He also finished 18th in the Alpine combined event.
“Nicole skied super well in the super-G,” said Ryan Wilson, SSCV’s head women’s FIS coach.
“Smooth, fast and the hill suited her well. (It was) fairly simple and moderate so she could let her skis really run, which is her biggest strength.”

“Really excited for Stewie,” added Pat Duran, SSCV’s head men’s FIS coach. “I know he wanted better but that is a great result and something he can be proud of. It is the first time that he has competed out of the country.”

Bruce and Begue are two of nine SSCV athletes who will be competing at the quadrennial event, which is being held at the site of the 2018 Winter Olympics from Jan. 19 – Feb. 1. Cross-country skier Rose Horning, mogul skiers Elizabeth Lemley, Jiah Cohen and Porter Huff and snowboarders Olivia Lisle, Brooklyn DePriest and Oliver Martin are also in South Korea.
More than 1,900 athletes from 80 countries are competing at the Youth Olympic Games, which debuted in 2012. SSCV alumni have performed well at every rendition.
Alex Leever placed 10th and 11th in the super combined and giant slalom, respectively, in 2012 and River Radamus won three golds (super-G, giant slalom and Alpine combined) at the 2016 Lillehammer Games as an SSCV skier. Emma Resnick’s 2020 trip to Lausanne, Switzerland was highlighted by a fourth-place giant slalom finish.

“It’s awesome to just get the experience with some of the best kids in the world,” Wilson said. “Good on Nicole for facing the big show with confidence and coming up with a great result.”
