Starting over at the finish

Gary Wingo

“It is finished”, Jesus exclaimed as He breathed His last. “It is finished” – his passion resonated off the cross. “It is finished” the life of the greatest person who ever lived was over. “It is finished” the words drift down through history to all who would listen and accept the truth. “It is finished.”The Roman cross did its work. Followers of Christ mourned, Roman soliders stood guard, and religious leaders breathed a sigh of relief. But Sunday brought a very different scenario. The sun’s first rays pierced the sky as sharply as the nails punctured the Son of God’s hands. Brokenhearted disciples made their way to the grave only to witness the most unusual, life-changing event. The stone was rolled away and the tomb empty! It WAS finished, but certainly not over! “He is risen!” the angel proclaimed. “He is risen”, the women told their fellow disciples. “He is risen”, the truth shouts to us this Easter!II Corinthians 5:21 tells us: “God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” Jesus Christ, the Son of God, not only took ALL our sins upon Himself, He actually became our sin. This is the truth and Grace of Easter. Regardless of the Da Vinci Code myth or the heretical “Judas” writings, Jesus died and bore the punishment we deserved because of one simple truth – He loves us. God’s love is as fresh, real, powerful, and life-changing today as it was 2,000 years ago. Our compassionate, merciful Father couldn’t imagine spending eternity without us! “It is finished” resounds down through history confirming God’s work on our behalf and the Son’s battle for our hearts. Because the power of Heaven stood up for us, we are forgiven and free.Just as Jesus Christ DID NOT stay in the grave, we can know there is more to life than Planet Earth! God’s grace-filled eternity is free for the asking; it is the gift of a brand new life! Together let’s embrace the depth of God’s compassion for our imperfect existence. For “If we confess with our lips Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9. Give Him your heart; Jesus fought, died, and rose for you. He did all the work for us. The past is finished, now let’s start life over with Him in freedom!Gary Wingo teaches a Study of the Truth of Jesus Sundays in Edwards.Vail, Colorado
