State troopers to enforce immigration laws

DENVER (AP) ” A new unit of the Colorado State Patrol will help enforce federal immigration laws starting July 1 now that 22 troopers have completed a five-week training program.

The troopers will do “limited immigration law enforcement” under an agreement with the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, the patrol said Tuesday in a written statement.

The troopers will “identify and remove” illegal immigrants involved in criminal activity, the patrol said.

The Colorado patrol is the 17th law enforcement agency nationwide with a working agreement with ICE. The federal agency has trained more than 270 officers under the program.

The Colorado troopers will receive their ICE training certificates in a ceremony Wednesday. Their average score in the program was 94.14, highest ever for the course, the patrol said.
