Steamboat schools begin banning sugar drinks
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colorado ” Steamboat Springs, Colorado schools are getting a head start in implementing a state ban on sugar soft drinks.
Cookies, ice cream, and brownies have also been banned from the Steamboat Springs High School cafeteria months before the July 1 deadline set by the state Legislature to get rid of sugar drinks.
School Nutritional Services Director Max Huppert says he wanted to make the transition early and expand it to other schools in the district.
Not all the old sweets have been replaced yet. For now, students can get bottled water instead of soda, and the carbonated fruit juice Izze beverages. School staffer Fran Pelletier has also been making fresh fruit smoothies.
The bill passed by the Legislature is aimed at reducing obesity.
