Steamboat Springs explores brief furloughs
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS , Colorado City employees in Steamboat Springs, Colorado could be facing brief weekly furloughs because of a budget crunch.City manager Jon Roberts has asked the citys department leaders to ask their staffers to take off four unpaid hours a week.Roberts says the goal is to trim work force costs without hurting city services. He says he would rather furlough folks briefly than fire them because of declining sales tax revenues.Steamboat Springs has 203 full-time positions and 51 part-time and seasonal positions. The Steamboat Pilot & Today reports the furlough move would save the city $1.53 million. Furloughs will be considered at city budget hearings next month.
