Steamboat Springs man sentenced in bear death
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colorado – A man who wildlife officers say shot and killed a bear in downtown Steamboat Springs and left it there has been ordered to pay $1,100 in fines and surcharges.
Kent Nightwalker was sentenced Wednesday. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and hunting in a careless manner in an agreement that stipulated that he pay the $1,100, spend a year on unsupervised probation, and perform 56 hours of community service. The plea agreement also stipulated that a six-month jail term would be suspended.
Nightwalker has said he was trying to scare the bear outside his home this summer when he fired the fatal shot. Nightwalker says he intended to shoot in the dirt.
