AVON ” The once dormant plot of land at the Avon/Beaver Creek roundabout is now alive with activity. Cranes move huge loads of steel, which are put into place by construction workers toiling high in the air.

The Gates Residences, formerly the Gates on Beaver Creek, a $72 million luxury condominium building at the base of Beaver Creek, is well under way, representatives from developer JMJ Development said. The building’s frame is expected to be completed by Oct. 24.

“Today is an important day for both JMJ and Avon as we see the steel flying on this magnificent project,” said Tim Barton, chief executive of JMJ Holding, JMJ Development’s Dallas-based parent company.

“We are delighted to be at this point in the development and look forward to adding to the burgeoning Avon community early in 2008 when proud owners start occupying these sensational condominiums.”

Overlooking U.S. Highway 6, the Eagle River and kitty corner from Riverfront Village ” an incoming development with a gondola to Beaver Creek, hotel rooms and shops ” the Gates Residences will have close access to the slopes, said spokeswoman Lisa Zandee.

The Gates also will run a private shuttle to Beaver Creek Mountain ” or just about anywhere else residents want to go, said Leigh Pezzicara of Gateway Land and Development, which is listing the condos.

The complex will also have a concierge, library, recreation room, fitness center, indoor and outdoor hot tubs and an indoor swimming pools. Ranging from 1,268 to 2,680 square feet, the 2- to 4-bedroom condos start at $975,000 and include 16 two-story penthouses.
