Special to the DailyA Stephen Webster-designed bracelet.

VAIL, Colorado ” Vail has long been known for its intermingling of the rugged Colorado mountain lifestyle with high-end leisure. Hot European style, rock-and-roll attitude and raw, industrial creativity will add to the mix at The Squash Blossom Wednesday, with a trunk show featuring the work of British jewelry designer Stephen Webster.

“He’s a brand new designer for us”, said Store Manager Amy Logan. “We are excited to share this designer with our clients. He’s a wonderful addition to our unique collection.”

Though Webster won’t be visiting the store himself, a representative ” his “right-hand man” ” will be at the store from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday with the entire Stephen Webster line plus “one-of-a-kind, unique pieces,” Logan said.

Webster leads a journey away from the dainty and conventional; now a part of fashion, jewelry is no longer merely gifts for traditional engagement, marriage or baby, but a bold opportunity for a statement of personality. Like all of Stephen’s work, there is a dark overtone to his work. You might find a hidden spider or the smokiness of fog in many of his pieces. Collections are named for their inspiration like Crystal Haze, Poison Ivy and Rose and Thorn.

Webster’s cutting-edge jewelry designs fuse classic beauty with a bold and unconventional edge, a combination that attracts celebrity clientele such as Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz and Elton John. Some consider Webster to be the “incarnation of glam rock” and the jewelry designer of our age. Americans perhaps know Webster best for his retro-chic ads with Grammy Award-winning pop princess Christina Aguilera, featured in recent fashion magazines.

Yet despite his grand status, Webster’s background is undeniably humble. A short start in fashion at a local college led to a jewelry making class where Stephen fell in love with the constructive, creative processes. Making jewelry led him from England to Canada where he apprenticed and developed his love for exotic colored stones. Returning to England in the 1990s he launched a London store in a city developing a international and cosmopolitan clientele.

His talent and refreshingly raw visions have led him far. Many years ago, Garrard’s of London gave Webster a huge break by agreeing to carry his line. Turning full circle, he was recently named the creative director of Garrard, the crown jeweler and oldest jewelry company in the world.

Far from the busy streets of cosmopolitan London, seasonal visitors and locals alike will enjoy catching Webster’s underground spirit and rock-and-roll edge at a Vail jewelry shop, The Squash Blossom. For more information, call 970-476-3129.
