Store owner shoots, kills alleged robber
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado ” A liquor store owner fatally shot a man he said was trying to rob him at gunpoint, police said.
The owner of Jet-Way Liquors called 911 just before 5 p.m. Monday to report a robbery. When officers arrived, they found the suspect with a gunshot wound to his chest.
The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Names of the store owner and the suspect have not been released. They were the only ones in the store at the time, police said.
People who live nearby described the owner as a friendly man who is often seen playing with his dog in the parking lot.
Janice Sturlaugson, who said she sometimes shops at Jet-Way, said it has been robbed before.
“Looks like they just got tired of it. Looks like they were ready this time,” she said.
Colorado’s “Make My Day” law allows people use deadly force in self-defense in their homes. An attempt to expand the protection to stores and workplaces failed in the Legislature in February.
