Storm wreaks havoc on Vail Pass
VAIL PASS ” A series of accidents caused by a fast-moving spring storm Tuesday resulted in the closure of westbound Interstate 70 near Vail Pass for nearly three hours, the Colorado State Patrol reported.
“We get this spring weather ” it moves in and it only takes a moment for things to ice up,” patrol Sgt. Shawn Olmstead said.
The storm brought gusty winds, snow and iced over I-70, Olmstead said. In the first two of the five accidents, two drivers lost control of their vehicles and rolled. One of the drivers was transported to Vail Valley Medical Center, possibly with serious injuries, Olmstead said.
According to Olmstead:
– In the next accident, a railroad-car-like container slid off a semi’s trailer when it was rear ended by another vehicle. The container then hit another semi trailer, causing extensive damage. No injuries were reported
– The final accident involved a pickup truck towing a flatbed trailer that braked to avoid backed-up traffic, collided with a box truck and then jack knifed and slid into a van that in turn hit two more cars. Minor injuries were reported.
– The accidents began at about 12:40 p.m. and I-70 westbound was closed until about 3:30 p.m.
