Strange days

Gary Wingo

What do you do when the world you thought you controlled slips away? Where do you turn when your reliance on “self” just doesn’t work? Do you try harder? Run faster just to keep up? Do you push all those confusing life-issues on the back-burner hoping they’ll simply do away?It seems that no matter how hard we work at it, life gets strange all on its own. And when it does, horizontal thinking doesn’t cut it. That is, we believe life is about us; therefore, we fight for what we want – sometimes it works, sometimes not. The truth is, this strange thing called life is NOT about us; it’s not about how self-reliant or successful we can be. I see so many people believing that all they have is “themselves” and they’ve just got to make do.Life does not have to be that way! No, Life is not about us – but it is about a loving Father, God Almighty, who cares for us whether we believe in Him or not. We can run away or hide from Him. We can rework our image of Him or decide He doesn’t exist. Doesn’t matter – whatever we believe, He still loves us and is right there pursuing us. As a matter of fact, He waits for you to turn to Him; He’s ready to jump into all your situations – with power and help beyond your comprehension!Sunday night, as my wife, dear friends, and I sat on our deck, we witnessed one of the most amazing sunsets you can imagine. God’s awesome masterpiece was brush-stroked with vivid colors; the sun-swathed clouds were billowing in their breathtaking beauty. The entire scene was framed between Aspens, Firs, and a hummingbird feeder covered with a flock of the tiny birds fighting for nourishment. As I watched with jaw-dropping attention, I thought, “I hope others are seeing this magnificent gift. How could anyone relegate such intricate beauty to a random act of creation? How can anyone not know the Lord exists and is calling out to them? The view was sheer artistry, a gift from God Himself to all who would just look and listen. When life isn’t working, when your circumstances overwhelm you, look up. God is there, loving you with breathtaking compassion and mercy right in the middle of your struggle. Listen to Christ’s message to us: “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” I John 3:1.Next time you look up and see the sunset, remember, God is reaching out to you. And through His Son Jesus Christ, everything we face – every joy or sorrow, success or failure, shapes our lives for a mighty purpose and true, attainable meaning. What do you do when your world is out of control? Turn to the One in control, God Almighty through Jesus Christ. The real adventure awaits!
