Student disciplined for saying ‘white power’

BROOMFIELD ” A Catholic high school student was disciplined Thursday after saying “white power” two or three times during a classroom discussion on immigration.

The discussion happened during a Spanish class of about 30 students at Holy Family High School.

The school’s principal, Sister Mary Rose Lieb, said fewer than six students expressed strong anti-immigration views and the rest of the class either remained silent or expressed support for immigrants. Two students who were offended were given permission to leave the class, she said.

Lieb said the administration received a complaint about the discussion and the students and teacher were interviewed. She didn’t identify the student who was disciplined.

“The administration treated this situation as a teaching moment ” an opportunity to reaffirm that respect and charity should be the foundation of every dialogue and encounter with another,” she said in a written statement.
