Student orchestra, chorus to perform Thursday

AVON, Colorado – The Vail Valley Foundation’s Youth Foundation First Notes Orchestra and Half Notes Chorus will help usher in spring at Avon Elementary School today as the third- and fourth-grade orchestra joins forces with the second-grade Half Notes choir for their annual spring concert.

Scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start in the Avon Elementary School gymnasium, the First Notes Orchestra is slated to serenade the crowd with their renditions of a number of standards, including the “Star Spangled Banner” and “Mexican Hat Dance.”

Friends, family and members of the community are invited to attend the performance and everyone is encouraged to bring a used instrument to donate to the First Notes program. The VVF’s Youth Foundation is hoping to expand into other schools throughout the valley.

Introduced by the Vail Valley Foundation in the fall of 2009, First Notes is a unique arts education program that puts musical instruments into the hands of Avon Elementary School students. Based on El Sistema, the Venezuelan youth orchestra system, this non-traditional method of teaching children to play music is introducing students to the world of live performance and the concept of achieving success through hard work, dedication, determination, and passion.

Members of the public wishing to attend the Avon Elementary awards program are requested to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the show as parking is limited at the school.
