CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico – A Guatemalan man originally arrested for burglary was being investigated in connection with a series of rapes in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua, authorities announced Sunday.Arrested Tuesday in the Chihuahua state capital, Guatemalan Ulises Ernesto Mijangos, 34, was charged in a break-in and later identified as suspect by state prosecutors for sexual crimes, said Chihuahua Attorney General Patricia Gonzalez Rodriguez at a press conference.Chihuahua authorities are seeking the man responsible for at least two rapes since 2003 in the Chihuahua’s capital and seven more in Ciudad Juarez, across the U.S. border from El Paso, Texas.DNA tests show the same assailant involved in eight of those rapes, while more rapes fit the same pattern in which an assailant entered residences through a window in the pre-dawn hours.Authorities were taking a statement on Sunday from Mijangos, who was being held in a Chihuahua City jail, Gonzalez Rodriguez said. The Guatemalan bore a strong resemblance to profiles of the rapist, including his facial features, build, voice, tattoos and scars, she said.Guatemalan consular officials were being notified of the investigation before further charges are presented, the attorney general said.Vail, Colorado
