Suspect in artifact case arrested in Colorado
SALT LAKE CITY – A Blanding man caught up in last year’s federal investigation into artifact looting is being detained after being arrested in Colorado.
U.S. Magistrate Samuel Alba ordered Brandon Laws to remain in federal custody after a brief hearing Tuesday.
Officials say Laws was recently arrested on federal land in Colorado on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
He was one of 26 people charged after a two-year investigation into those who dig up, sell and collect artifacts taken illegally from public and tribal land in the Four Corners area.
He was released in June after pleading not guilty to two federal charges. Conditions included that he stay away from drugs and stay off certain federal lands.
Alba said he was concerned about Laws’ arrest and ordered him to stay in custody pending a trial.
