Suspect killed in gunfight at DUI checkpoint

DENVER ” A suspect was fatally wounded and two officers were injured in a gunfight after a sport-utility vehicle was pulled over at a DUI checkpoint, authorities said.

The suspect was shot in the head and died just before 2 a.m. Friday at a hospital, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. The suspect’s name had not been released.

Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Curti was shot in his left wrist and was expected to undergo surgery Friday, officials said. State Trooper Dennis Wilder was shot in the left foot and was expected to be released Friday.

Jackson said both men were in fair condition.

A third man, Denver Police Officer Ryan Cobernick, suffered a broken nose. He was treated and released, Jackson said.

About 45 police officers from several Denver-area agencies were staffing the DUI checkpoint when the SUV was pulled over for a broken windshield.

The driver was arrested after a background check, and when officers opened a passenger door of the SUV, another man emerged with a gun. Officers wrestled with the man when gunfire erupted.
