AVON — Explore the depths of deep relaxation and tranquility by dropping below your thinking mind and entering a zero-stress zone with the Yoga Nidra workshop on Sunday, Jan. 3, at Synergy Center for Wellness in Avon.

According to The American Institute of Stress, stress is the leading cause of disease. It is more prevalent than cancer or heart disease, it has been known to suppress the immune system and it is the underlying root of anxiety, depression and insomnia. Practicing mindfulness meditation not only relaxes the body, it restores balance and a sense of peace and tranquility to the body and mind.

With more than 50,000 thoughts a day, it’s hard to remain in a state of peace and relaxation. Many of us react mindlessly to situations, using filtered glasses of our past experiences to perceive and react to the present. Unconscious self-defeating patterns get acted out and replayed, reinforcing our behavior patterns.

Yoga Nidra allows you to disengage from the mind and release these self-defeating behaviors effortlessly and spontaneously.

“Many call Yoga Nidra the gateway to meditation because it is simple to do,” said Kamini Desai, director of education at Amrit Yoga Institute in Salt Springs, Florida. “Unlike many types of meditation, anyone can do this. If you can lie down and follow simple instructions, you can do this.”

You can’t do anything wrong in this practice, which means even if you don’t follow each instruction, you still receive the benefits. With practice, you will be more mindful or conscious about your choices, all day long, everyday and the benefits do not reverse.
