Take a guided hike to historic quarry on Horn Ranch Open Space on Aug. 25 or Oct. 11

EAGLE COUNTY — Eagle County Open Space, Eagle Valley Land Trust and Eagle County Historical Society will host a guided hike of the historic stone quarry at Horn Ranch from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25. The Horn Ranch Open Space is protected through a partnership between Eagle County Open Space and Eagle Valley Land Trust.

The quarry at Horn Ranch produced stones for Denver’s Brown Palace Hotel, Aspen’s Hotel Jerome and Pueblo’s Opera House in the late 1800s. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about a unique part of Eagle County history and see views of Red Canyon.

Those interested in attending the Horn Ranch hike are advised to be prepared for unpredictable weather and conditions in the field and are encouraged to bring sun protection, water, appropriate layers for Colorado weather, sturdy shoes and trekking poles, if desired. Dogs are not permitted on the Horn Ranch hike.

The Horn Ranch hike is free, but space is limited. Email jfoulis@evlt.org or call 970-748-7654 for more information and to reserve a spot. The hike is weather-dependent; announcements regarding inclement weather and the status of the hike will be posted to the Land Trust’s Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/EVLandTrust on the morning of the event.

The next Horn Ranch hike is scheduled from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11. For more information on the open space program, visit http://www.eaglecounty.us/openspace.
