It’s undeniably been a tough few months.

It seems like every day, we hear more bad news on the economy, or about strife and unrest somewhere in the world. As important as it is to be informed about the state of affairs, it’s also important this holiday season to reflect on and feel grateful for all the good things in our lives.

I recommend taking a break, and can think of no better way to step away from the news and embrace the joyful feelings of the holiday season than by celebrating with the Irish Tenors.

Finbar Wright, Anthony Kearns and Karl Scully bring their special holiday concert to the Vilar Performing Arts Center on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. The evening is a beautiful holiday tribute, with a blend of traditional carols and classic Irish ballads. Since they first joined voices in 1998, The Irish Tenors have made countless traditional songs breathe with new life and have proven themselves gifted interpreters of a wide range of material. The bright ringing tones of the tenor voice appeal to the listener in a unique way. In opera the tenor is often the hero or love interest and many of the most enduring arias are those sung by the tenor. Domingo, Carreras and Pavarotti extended their singing careers with their very popular The Three Tenors concerts that introduced an entire new generation to the beauty of the tenor voice. In that same tradition, The Irish Tenors have renewed our interest in these lovely carols and ballads. They have sold millions of albums and perform to audiences around the world. They are one of the most successful Irish touring acts ever, second only to the rock group U2.

U.S. audiences were first introduced to the Irish Tenors when their landmark concert at the Royal Dublin Society was broadcast on PBS. The response was electric, and in March of 1999, the group began their first American tour, drawing thousands of fans to Madison Square Garden and selling out major venues along the journey west.

The Vilar Center is an ideal venue to experience the beautiful voices of these three talented performers. Add to this mix the lush sounds of a 30-piece orchestra and this is an evening not to be missed. The Irish Tenors Christmas tour sells out venues throughout the states year after year and we are proud and fortunate to be able to bring them to our community.

Our holiday lineup continues with “A Christmas Carol” on Tuesday at 4 and 8 p.m. This show has become a holiday tradition for so many families ” there is no better way to get in the spirit than by feeling the joy of this time-honored tale.

The Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats, another encore performance at the Vilar Center, take the stage on Thursday, Christmas Day, at 4:30 p.m. and Dec. 6 at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Don’t miss the breathtaking feats of acrobatics, balance and artistry … a visual journey for the whole family!

Dionne Warwick, Quartet San Francisco, The Lowe Family and Three Dog Night round out our lineup through the New Year ” much more to come on these performances next week.

I look forward to seeing you at the theatre this holiday season, and to celebrating the joys of this time of year with you.
