Even if Republican gubernatorial hopeful Dan Maes drops out of the governor’s race, third-party candidate Tom Tancredo said Thursday he is in through Election Day.

Two weeks ago, Tancredo proposed that both he and Maes exit the contest so the GOP could appoint a more formidable candidate to take on Democrat John Hickenlooper. Maes rejected the offer.

Now, Tancredo said, the offer is off the table.

“I have done my best. But now I have a responsibility to all the people who have come forward to give their support, and therefore, I will stay in the race,” Tancredo said Thursday.

The former GOP Congressman, who switched his affiliation to the American Constitution Party last month, raised $200,000 in August, according to his campaign.

Tomorrow is the deadline for the Secretary of State’s office to certify the ballot. After that, Tancredo’s name will appear as a candidate regardless of whether he changes his mind down the road.

Dick Wadhams, chair of the Colorado GOP, declined to comment. Wadhams had delivered Tancredo’s message to Maes last month.
