AVON — Importer Robert Fowles of Table 31 imports will pour five Spanish and Argentine wines from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night at vin48 in Avon.
Table 31 Imports began in the early 2000s, in Summit County. It was started by Robert Fowles and Martin Allen with the goal of bringing great wines to the U.S. marketplace from Spain and Argentina.
The name “Table 31 Imports” comes from table No. 31 at the Great Northern Tavern Restaurant at Keystone Resort. This is where the men met and started their journey into wine importing.
“We have two rules that always guide us in our decisions to import the best wines that we can find,” Fowles said. “No. 1 is no co-ops. In our mind when you have more than one owner of vineyard land this often leads to inconsistency in vintages. But also no real knowledge of what grapes came from what plot of land. We always want to know where the grapes called their home.
“And No. 2 is one bodega/appellation. Through many trials, we decided that one bodega per appellation should be enough. Simply put we find the best one bodega for us. We adhere to this (with very few exceptions) so that the bodega will know that we are singular with them in the effort,” Fowles continued.

Charles Hays, vin48’s chef and owner, will pair the wines with appetizers on the restaurant’s patio. The event is part of vin48’s summer tasting series, which takes place every Wednesday and pairs wine or beer with Hays’ cuisine. All wines served are available at discounted prices from Beaver Liquors in Avon.
