Teams search for 6 people headed to Aspen-area hut

ASPEN ” Search teams on snowmobiles are looking for six people who were headed to a mountain hut about 12 miles south of the Aspen, Colorado ski area in whiteout conditions.

Pitkin County sheriff’s officials say a man hiking to the hut with the group Friday got separated from them in blowing snow and called authorities after making his way out of the wilderness.

The six people are described as experienced skiers, but they have not been to the hut before. The Goodwin-Greene hut is located at an elevation of 11,680 feet in an area prone to avalanches.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center listed the avalanche danger for the Aspen zone as considerable Saturday. The National Weather Service forecasts 1 to 2 feet of new snow there this weekend.
