Teen deaths on Colorado highways drop by one-third

DENVER, Colorado ” Highway officials say the number of teenagers killed in Colorado traffic crashes dropped more than a third last year.

The state Department of Transportation said Monday that preliminary statistics show a 34 percent drop from 2006 to 2007. The numbers include drivers and passengers from 16 to 20 years old.

Last year, 43 were killed in wrecks, compared with 66 the year before. Teen deaths hit 107 in 2002.

State officials say several factors are behind the drop, including new restrictions on teen drivers, driver education and a crackdown on seat belt use.
