EAGLE COUNTY — Teen volunteers are paired with younger children for an hour of one-on-one shared reading time once a week for eight weeks in the Reading Buddies program.
In addition to helping a younger child read and succeed, teens are given the opportunity to develop leadership, problem-solving and communication skills while emerging readers get extra practice with a trained mentor in a fun and creative environment.
The Eagle Valley Library District is still accepting mentors and little buddies interested in reading.
Buddy pairs take turns reading, play literacy games and take part in group activities. In a group, students share elements enjoyed from stories read, as well as goals for future sessions.
A big buddy mentor training will take place for new volunteers.

Get in the Game: Read!
Teens are also encouraged to participate in the Get in the Game: Read! summer reading program this June and July.
Those interested are invited to attend weekly programs, read, create and compete for prizes. The program challenges teens to read and succeed during the summer month while engaging in fun fitness activities.
Weekly special programs at the Avon library include K’NEX mini-golf, black-light badminton, volleyball competitions and more.
The Eagle library is hosting the Amazing Reading Race for another literary experience, and Gypsum’s programs includes games of skill and thrill.
