Teen skier dies after hitting tree
BRECKENRIDGE ” An 18-year-old man from North Carolina died Tuesday after hitting a tree at Breckenridge Ski Resort, the Summit County coroner said.
The victim’s name was not released. Resort officials said he was not wearing a helmet.
He died of massive internal injuries, Coroner Joanne Richardson said.
Witnesses reported the teen was skiing very fast before hitting the tree, Richardson said.
The ski patrol was alerted to the accident at 10:10 a.m., and the teen was taken to Breckenridge Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, resort officials said.
The teen was at the resort for a church school senior trip that arrived in town Monday afternoon, Richardson said. Tuesday was the group’s first day of skiing.
