Telluride cuts staff, services amid budget crunch

TELLURIDE, Colorado ” The Telluride town government is cutting staff and reducing services because of a $2.4 million budget shortfall.

Six full-time positions and some part-time spots are being eliminated, and the Galloping Goose buses, the town’s free transit service, will sit idle in the spring and fall offseason.

The town is reducing pool hours and doing only basic maintenance on roads. Fewer workers will help out at festivals, which include June’s bluegrass festival.

Sales taxes were 14 percent below projections in February and a real estate transfer tax is projected to bring in just $1.5 million this year, down from nearly $5 million in 2007, because of a sluggish real estate market.
