The Vail Valley Art Guild is dedicated to fostering and promoting the artistic growth of its members and artists in and around the Vail Valley. This month the guild is showcasing the art of the next generation.

All month long you can see the works of art from students at the local libraries. Original works from Battle Mountain High School students can be seen at the Avon Public Library while the Gypsum Public Library is displaying works created by Eagle Valley High School students. The public space is courtesy of the Vail Valley Art Guild.

“The Vail Valley Art Guild reserved the library space. In the past, we’ve displayed student work in our Eagle Gallery but that space was only open on a limited basis,” said Chris Sena, secretary of the Vail Valley Art Guild. “We figured it would be nicer for the students and families to have their work shown for a month in an accessible space like the library.

Sena and photographer Rick Spitzer are in charge of art exhibits.

Dozens of students from both schools showed their works using different mediums at each library, with one medium of the fabric variety. Aubrey Winstead of Eagle Valley High School created a floor-length, navy blue prom gown with a side ruffle.

This is the first time that both high schools have done an end-of-the-year exhibit showcased in this manner.

In the past, the Vail Valley Art Guild has hosted works of art from area high school students at its gallery in Eagle. The guild secured the space at the public libraries for students to showcase their works to the public.

“The Vail Valley Art Guild is happy to support these young artists. They are our future and I think a lot of us grew up in urban areas where we had more access to art and art education,” Sena said. “I know there’s a huge emphasis on sports in schools, but we need to open students up to other cultural avenues.”

In the ceramics exhibit, Eagle Valley High School art student, Gage Stowell, created a rather fearsome vase with teeth. Eagle Valley High School’s art is on display at the Gypsum Public Library.

The art will be on display at both libraries until the end of the month. Battle Mountain High School will host its AP Art and Design reception on May 15 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Eagle Valley High School students already had their reception on May 6.
