EDWARDS — Each year, The Bookworm of Edwards hosts its Children’s Writing Contest for grades three through 12. Winners and honorable mentions from each grade level are announced at the award ceremony and book signing on Friday, May 20, and published in “Ungoverned Children.” Winning stories are also excerpted in the Vail Daily.

Submissions are judged on voice, creativity and strength of writing. The deadline to submit your child’s story is 5 p.m. today. Submissions that do not follow guidelines will not be considered, and any stories received after the deadline will not be judged.

• Entrants must be enrolled at an Eagle County school (public, private or home school) and be in grades three through 12.

• Entries must be previously unpublished.

• Submissions must be fiction or nonfiction short stories, not essays. Short stories have plot, characters, setting and dialogue.

• Electronic submissions in Microsoft Word format will be accepted. Hard copies will not be accepted.

• Submissions must be double-spaced and typed in 12-point Times New Roman font.

• Number the pages.

• Do not include illustrations, as they will not be judged.

• Do not include a cover page.

• Multiple or team submissions will not be considered.

• Title the story in the following format: “First name last name, story title”

Page requirements

• Third grade: three to five pages.

• Fourth and fifth grades: five to 10 pages.

• Sixth through eighth grades: five to 15 pages.

• Ninth through 12th grades: 10 to 15 pages.
