The Heat Is On!
“It is disturbing and unnecessary to see so many more lives lost last year to drinking and driving,” says Colonel Lonnie Westphal, chief of the Colorado State Patrol. “This means we have an even bigger job ahead of us. We plan to continue increased enforcement statewide and we need the public to join in this fight against Colorado’s most serious highway safety problem.
Motorists can also report suspected drunken drivers to law enforcement, Westphal says. Free cell phone calls can be made to “*CSP (Star 277)” or
“*DUI (Star 384),” or you can call 1-999-477-HEAT (4328) from a regular telephone. Provide the dispatcher with the exact location, a description of the vehicle and the manner in which the vehicle is being driven.
Do not attempt to follow or pursue the vehicle.
Alcohol-related traffic deaths are higher than in 1995 prior to the launch of The Heat Is On! Campaign against drunken driving. Alcohol was a factor in 262 traffic deaths in 1995. This is the seventh summer that law enforcement agencies in Colorado

have participated in The Heat Is On! effort with increased enforcement during July and August. Last year there were 61 alcohol-related traffic deaths in July and August compared to 76 such deaths during those months in 1995.
“The devastation caused by drunken driving and boating is measured in the thousands of active lives that are lost and healthy bodies that are broken and crippled,” says Westphal.
More than 500 officers and troopers will be on the road looking for intoxicated drivers and boaters this holiday weekend. The CSP and 48 police and sheriff’s departments will participate in The Heat Is On! DUI enforcement campaign this weekend. The enforcement period ends at 3 a.m. on Monday.
“Don’t lose your freedom to impaired driving,” adds Westphal. “Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a serious crime that kills. The choice is yours: Designate a sober driver or one will be appointed for you who will take you straight to jail.”
The following agencies will conduct DUI and/or saturation patrols during the holiday weekend:
– Avon P.D.
– Basalt P.D.
– Buena Vista P.D.
– Clear Creek Co. S.O.
– Routt Co. S.O.
– Weld Co. S.O.
– Yuma P.D.
The Heat Is On! Campaign started in 1996 during the July Fourth holiday weekend. Since then, the campaign has made 21,996 DUI arrests. Last year, agencies participating in The Heat Is On! Campaign made 666 DUI arrests during a week long July Fourth holiday enforcement period.
