This weekend the hills around the Vilar Center will be alive with the sound of music. No, it’s not a screening of the movie – it’s the actual descendants of the famous singing von Trapp family. The von Trapp Children will bring their historic show to the Beaver Creek theater at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The four children, Sofia,15, Melanie,14, Amanda, 12, and Justin, 10 are the grandchildren of Werner von Trapp, portrayed as Kurt in the play and movie, and the great-grandchildren of Baron George von Trapp. The show is a tribute to the family’s colorful history, complete with the old Rodgers and Hammerstein favorites, as well as folk and classical music first popularized in the United States by the original Trapp Family Singers between 1938 and 1956.”We talk a lot in the show about our family’s history, even down to the clothes we wear,” said Sofia von Trapp. “For instance, the dirndl, or traditional Austrian dress I wear, belonged to Maria. My Opa (grandmother in German) altered all of our clothes to fit us. All of the dirndls we wear belonged to various family members.”We sing some of the songs our grandparents used to sing – also some old Gospel songs and some Celtic songs, and of course, all the hits from ‘The Sound of Music'” Sofia said. The children, who have all been singing since they were very young, started touring professionally in 2002. Already, the children’s show has sold out theaters across the United States, and they take on a new part of the world in August when they tour Australia and New Zealand on the 15th anniversary of the Trapp Family Singers’ historic tour of those countries. Venues on the tour will include the landmark Sydney Opera House.

“It’s going to be a blast getting to see where they filmed Lord of the Rings,” Melanie said. “I hope we’ll get to see some of the places our grandparents sang.”For more information about the show or to purchase tickets, call the Vilar Center at 845-TIXS (8497) or visit http://www.vilarcenter.org. The children and their parents will be around after the show to meet the audience.Sound of music
