The ‘stick it to us’ package
Vail, CO, Colorado
I, like 52 percent (www.gallup.com) of Americans, support a stimulus package, believing that our economy is truly in the tank and our government should do something to stimulate growth and employment.
However, I cannot in good conscience join the mere 39 percent (www.gallup.com) of Americans who support the current proposed spending package.
Spending for projects that create jobs, for lower-income taxes and for tax credits for housing and auto purchases are worthy proposals.
By some accounts, 60 percent of the proposed S-1 bill is pure pork; i.e., $600 million for government fleet vehicles, $650 million for digital-TV converter-box coupons, $21 million to re-sod the Washington Monument National Mall and millions spent for safe-sex programs in schools.
Hello, Sens. Udall and Bennett. What are you thinking? Do you not listen to your constituents? Do you not listen to the 200 prominent economists who advise against the current bailout plans?

Barack Obama campaigned on the promise he would cut excessive spending and programs. Change? What change?
