VAIL ” New York City modern rock band, The WMDs, are back in town and will perform at The Club in Vail for three night in a row beginning Thursday night. The show begins at 10 p.m. each night and is free.

The WMDs have spent the last several years building a national audience grass-roots style, from the fans up, and this summer proves no different. Traversing American relentlessly, with 20-plus dates a month, the independent band still finds time to sneak into the studio to add final touches to their second full-length album.

“We’ve been working constantly this past year, and the time we’ve spent on the road has really informed this new record,” said guitarist Jaime Sturm.

The Manhattan-based group formed in 2003 when recent NYU music technology grad and Boulder-native, Brian Bauers, was scoring a television commercial. A mutual friend recommended young NYC guitarist Jaime Sturm to record guitar on the project. The meeting was auspicious.

“Jaime had one of the best guitar tones of any professional player I’d heard, and we worked well together,” lead-singer Bauers explains. Five years later that session has developed into careers for the two.

The sound of The WMDs is their own, but often compared to Tom Petty meets Radiohead by way of John Mayer ” the band wears its influences well and does them proud. The band’s line-up is completed by drummer Paul Amorese (Bacci, Hypnotic Clambake) and bassist Ari Wachsman (Siamese Connection).

While an original band at heart, all-night marathon sets have proven The WMDs aren’t afraid to mix it up. Whether reintroducing classic rock staples, resurrecting old school hip-hop, or reinventing current top 40, the band succeeds in giving the audience a show like no other.

“We want to keep a crowd on its feet all night. That’s our job. Whether we’re trying out a new song we just wrote or breaking into something like ‘Africa’ by Toto, the dexterity of this band is what sets us apart. You’ll definitely see that kind of performance this September in Vail,” Sturm said.
