The WMDs: Who has them now?

Henri Stone

In a July 2003 interview with Larry King, ex-President Bill Clinton defended President George Bush saying, “It is incontestable that on the day I left office, there was a substantial amount of biological and chemical material unaccounted for in Iraq.” Every intelligence agency in the world – French, British, German, Russian, Czech, you name it – agreed before the war; Jordanian intelligence can certainly confirm their opinion today. All the major intelligence agencies agreed that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. On June 9, the U.N. Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) briefed the Security Council on Saddam’s lightning-fast dismantling of missile and WMD sites before and during the war. Executive Chairman Demetrius Perricos detailed the export of thousands of tons of missile components, nuclear reactor vessels and fermenters for chemical and biological warheads and the discovery of many of these items as close as Jordan and as far away as Holland. Israeli intelligence had been tracking the large-scale smuggling of Saddam’s WMD program across the Syrian border for at least two months before the war. Syria, ruled also by the Baath Party, of course would never permit UNMOVIC into the country and has long been the world’s foremost sponsor of terrorism. Canada’s prime minister, Paul Martin, addressing a group of 700 university researchers and businessmen in Montreal, said, “The fact is that there is now we know well a proliferation of nuclear weapons that Saddam Hussein had. We don’t know where they are. Terrorists have access to all of them.” Where is the major news press coverage? Non-existent. They are concealing the facts from the American public. The major news networks and the Democratic spin meisters continue to attempt to brainwash the American public with chants of “there are no WMDs, the president lied to us.” Of course there are no WMDs in Baghdad. Given three months to hide and remove them, would any half-smart dictator leave them lying around? The liberals in all of their condescension and arrogance toward Arabs and conservatives must think that all Middle Easterners are camel jockeys who ride around the desert swatting flies. They must have seen “Laurence of Arabia” too many times. The Iraqi scientists are extremely well educated at schools such as Harvard, MIT, Cal Tech and the University of Colorado. It seems difficult for the liberals to comprehend, but my Iraqi and Saudi friends actually took advanced courses in nuclear physics, biology, chemistry, astrophysics. They studied for advanced degrees in nuclear physics and experimented in our CU cyclotron lab. It seems that the press can’t cope with the idea of these primitive people actually going home and building a Manhattan project with the help of the North Koreans, Pakistanis, Germans and enormous amounts of oil money. On April 26, over 20 tons of chemical weapons were seized from conspirators in Jordan. Terrorist leader Abu al Zarqawi (who allegedly personally beheaded Nicholas Berg) intended to wipe out the U.S. Embassy, the Jordanian prime minister’s office, the Jordanian intelligence office and at least 20,000 civilians by detonating a large chemical device which would have spread a huge toxic cloud over the area. Twenty tons!Where was the press corps? Did CNN and the other news agencies think that al Qaida bought this stuff at the local Home Depot in Aman? On Wednesday, Aug. 18, our own Vail Daily and the Denver Post reported that eight men were arrested and charged with conspiracy to murder and violations of the Terrorism Act after they were found to possess surveillance information on the financial centers in New York, Washington, D.C., and New Jersey that were the focus of the terror alert earlier this month. They were charged with conspiracy to use “radioactive material, toxic gases, chemicals and explosives.” A spokesman for the Democratic Party had accused the Bush administration of issuing the terror alert for “political reasons.” The behavior of Michael Moore and the radical Democrats is stupid at best. During World War II, these people would have been arrested for treason. The lives of possibly millions of Americans are at risk. Michael Moore himself says that we are “possibly the dumbest people on the planet … in thrall to conniving, thieving, smug pricks. We Americans suffer from an enforced ignorance.” Truly spoken, Michael, if Americans believe you and your dishonest propaganda and lies. You will laugh at them all the way to the bank with your loot. You will be indifferent as they pay for your treachery with their lives – on a train or plane or in a crowded subway station. Mr. Moore is now releasing “Fahrenheit 911” in the Middle East through Front Row Entertainment, a UAE based firm. By fanning the fires of hate and ignorance that smolder in the Arab street and with the support of Hezbollah, he is becoming as famous in Beirut as he is in Hollywood. Abraham Lincoln said that “a house divided against itself cannot stand.” Protecting ourselves against terrorism should be an American issue, not a Democrat partisan fight. When the liberal left gets in bed with Hezbollah and the Democratic Party gives treasonous people like Michael Moore a place of honor at their convention, it is clear that the safety of our citizens and national security interests are at great risk.Henri Stone of Gypsum is the former chairwoman of the Eagle County Republican Party and the 2nd Congressional District Republican Party.
